priorities
Thursday, September 4, 2008 | heather (rock.gardener) Is this Spam? Our first priority should be decent free education to young people who want to learn and are capable to do so. Vocational school should be available to those who do not wish to enter into an academic field. Parents should bear the full responsibility to teach their children decent manners so they can be taught and the teacher can get on with the job. No child left behind should be eliminated, we now only can teach to the lowest common denominator. If need be, children should repeat the grade they failed and not pull all others down with them.
Second priority: Universal healthcare should be a basic right. Medicare has been exploited by making it the primary insurer even if other insurance is still paid for. The whole healthcare system needs to be reformed. We spend 3 times more than any of the other industrialized nations who have universal healthcare. Why do we always have to reinvent the wheel?
Have Medicare available for all and have sublimental insurance for those who want private rooms, televisions, menues of things nobody eats when sick anyhow. (I am from Europe, that's how it works there.)
How to pay for it?
We are paying billions of dollars in subsidies to the oil companies even though they are making more than ever before. We have 140 bases around the world. We could buy our oil much cheaper than going to war over it. There is more tax money hidden away in the Caymen Islands and now in Dubai. We can save jobs in the US by taxing all imported goods from American companies, who have outsourced our jobs and are therefore avoiding the taxman. We cannot account for billions of dollars we spent in Iraque. There are a lot of grubby fingers right here in our government.
We have to pay for it by taxing the people accordingly. You get what you pay for! Yes and that means higher taxes for all of us. Imagine you never have to worry about healthcare again, for yourself or any one in your family, or being turned down for existing conditions. Carefree, just like our selfserving congress, who claims to serve us. It's well worth it.
