Capitalism Rethought?

Thursday, May 22, 2008 | Jason Jovine

Some of you have read my articles and by now must know where I stand on capitalism.  I told you then and I will tell you again that unfettered capitalism is NOT a good thing.

In America, we are beginning to see the cracks in capitalism (at least those of us who are paying close attention are).

If you look very closely you will see the evidence of it.  The problem with capitalism is that, by design, it rewards deviant behavior.

For example, let’s say that you are a conventional doctor with his/her own practice and you take insurance.  You get rewarded based on how many patients you see, how many drugs you prescribe, and how many procedures (e.g. surgeries) that you do.

Does this make sense to you?

It sure doesn’t to me.  So especially if you just graduated medical school and have a ton of loans to repay, there is a conflict of interest.  What may be best for the patient may not be best for you.  Have you known any doctors who have done needless procedures, or rushed you in and out of their office, or prescribed drugs to you that you didn’t need?

Have you ever been frustrated when the doctor isn’t really listening to you, because he is thinking about something else?

Again, there is a conflict of interest between you and the doctor; you guys are NOT on the same side of the fence, by design.

Wouldn’t it be better if the doctor were compensated based on how healthy you were?  Or if he got you to stop smoking or to exercise more?  In other words, shouldn’t he be compensated based on making you healthier or keeping you from being unhealthy?  Shouldn’t both of your interests be aligned so that there is no conflict?

Now, let’s take the story a step further and say that the doctor misdiagnosed a patient because the doctor was careless with the patient because the doctor rushed the patient in and out of his office.  Then the patient sues.

This lawsuit creates more deviant behavior because it increases the demand for attorneys, and we all should know that attorneys basically make their living by suing people, and many (but not all) bring great misery into peoples' lives.  They price gouge you when you need them the most, and the legal system doesn’t reward attorneys who authentically seek justice.  The judicial system is a game that rewards those who can play it the best.

This doesn’t even count those individuals who go to law school because they have been so worked over by the system that they feel that they need to learn the law so as not to be taken advantage of again.  It creates a vicious cycle.

Now, just speaking for myself, I learned my lesson with doctors and now only use alternative doctors.  I pay an arm and a leg for the service, but the doctor gives me the time that I need to make educated decisions and is so much more thorough than the previous conventional doctors that I have dealt with.

My insurance company (Blue Cross/ Blue Shield of Florida) gets away with bloody murder because I have to pay for the alternative treatments out of my own pocket; they cover none of it.  The treatments that I have been on with this alternative doctor have been fantastic but expensive.

Insurance companies force you to use conventional medicine, or else they don’t pay for it.  We all know that conventional medicine is over-prescribed and has a ton of side affects (which is another form of deviant behavior).

Let’s take a stockbroker as another example.  A stockbroker usually gets a very low (if any) base salary and is essentially a salesman who gets paid based on the number of times that he gets you to trade.  This creates a BIG TIME conflict of interest.  He may try and get you to sell a stock when it may be in your interest to hold it, or he may get you to buy a stock when it may not be in your interest to do so.

We can say the same thing for mortgage brokers, which is one of the reasons that we are in this current economic mess today.  BECAUSE OF THE CAPITALIST SYSTEM, THEY WERE REWARDED FOR THEIR DEVIANT BEHAVIOR.  THE BROKERS AND THE COMPANIES THAT APPROVED THE LOANS THEY MADE WERE BEING REWARDED BY THE SYSTEM FOR THEIR DEVIANT BEHAVIOR.

Our politicians are definitely the worst of them all.  They give tax credits to companies who ship jobs overseas.  They do this because they are in the pockets of big business.

The politicians' interests should be but are not aligned with the American publics' interests.  Middle class jobs are being shipped overseas.  Construction jobs or “lower pay scale jobs” are given to people who cross our borders illegally, because there are no real penalties handed out to the businesses that hire them.

DO NOT BLAME the illegal immigrants; they are doing what any one of us would do if we needed to feed our family.  BLAME your government that doesn’t care about you and allows businesses to do what they want to do and act the way that they want to act at the expense of the American people.

As the good jobs disappear, people are forced to act in an even more deviant way to provide for themselves.  For example, law school applications are up.  See this blurb from the Bureau of Labor Statistics regarding lawyers:

Job prospects. Competition for job openings should continue to be keen because of the large number of students graduating from law school each year.”

Many young people see that good jobs are going (or are on the way out), so they go to law school because they figure that will be a way to make a good living.  This creates more new lawyers entering the market straddled with debt, more lawsuits, and more deviant behavior.  Do you get the point yet?

The “Boomerang Generation” is made up of young adults/kids who go to college and can’t find a job that they would have been able to find a few years ago, because there are no more decent paying jobs for those with a bachelor's degree from a decent school.  These young adults graduate from school, straddled with debt, and are forced to move back home with their parents because it is simply too expensive to live on there own.

I see plenty of them.  THIS IS REAL FOLKS!!!

The media now is a joke.  Everything is about getting viewers and making money.  Real issues that are important to the American people no longer matter.  Scandalous issues and issues that try to scare you and your family matter to them because they get ratings.

The icing on the cake, and one of the biggest insults, came when President Bush a couple of years ago in his State of the Union address had the audacity to bring up steroids in baseball as a major issue in America today!!!

Are you kidding me?  Steroids in baseball!!  Aren’t there more important issues than that?  This is just another tactic used by politicians to distract the American people from issues that really matter.
(Moreover, the reason baseball players act in this deviant manner in the first place is because Capitalism rewards this behavior.  The owners of the teams and every else looks the other way.  It was and is just a convenient issue for politicians to bring up.)

Ritalin and other drugs used for ADHD are used like crazy in schools (especially in Ivy League schools).  The pressure on these kids is so intense to succeed that many take these drugs to have a competitive advantage over their peers.  These drugs help you concentrate.

One Ivy League student that I spoke with said that when he took this drug “It made him super interested and focused in a very boring subject”.  It also helped him achieve a high grade in the class.
As food prices and gas prices increase, and as the good jobs go elsewhere, the gap between the rich and the poor keeps increasing.  The economists out there are, in my opinion, a sorry bunch of saps for not having the courage to speak out louder about the problems with capitalism.  But then again, they might be afraid they will lose their jobs or not be taken seriously if they do.

That’s why I am here.

Until the next time folks ...

P.S. As always, feel free to send me your love/hate mail.

I came from Soviet Union in 1987. Marxist Socialism has some advantages, as does National Socialism Hitler. Free market has some advantages over both types of socialism.

The problem is to balance interests of capitalists with interests of consumers. Actually, Mussolini did it the best.

So, it's not capitalism to blame. We need to improve the system by studying Mussolini system.

Neither Republicans nor democ Rats are interested to solve the problems.

    Jason.

Great Article on capitalism! You hit the nail on the head with all of it. Americans are allowing our politicians to get a way with murder, and we are supporting the wrong things in our society (sports over education, money over principles.etc.). We are bringing about our own demise and are to stupid to realize it! May God bless you and yours - keep the great commentary coming.

    sincerely,

    Dan

Some of the points you make are not well thought out.

The reason distortions in the market exist are usually due to restrictions on free trade brought about by government interference!

The reason doctors and lawyers can charge what they do is because they have unions that make the teamsters look like cub scouts. Not only do they meet ALL of the definions of a union, they are self regulating! They can charge you what they damn well please, because they by definition violate fundemental tenets of capitalism. You cannot bargain with them at arms length without duress.

You can't afford a lawyer? The judge can hire one for you and you HAVE to pay his fees.

The hospital won't provide services at a given price you can afford for something that is killing you? You can either pay up, go bankrupt or die. Or maybe all three. What's more, the government says you have to deal with them. Their unions are the ABA and AMA. How many politicians are lawyers anyway.

The government is the reason we don't have American shipping company. Uncle says you have to pay Union wages to the longshoremen. The companies move to Shanghai or the Azores...

Think of the distortions taxation and accounting regulations make in industry. The rail for railroads was thought to last indefinitely and so had to be expensed in the year of purchase. In hard times, railroads let the track go to hell to save having to write off big expenses.

CEO's don't want to have to tell the stockholders how much they make. What a crock! And stockholders can't make them tell now except by having a revolt.

    There, I have vented.

I thought your article was great. As a psychologist, I have pondered these issues time and time again. The greed and exploitation so pervasive in our society is a symptom of our morals (or should I say lack of). We live in a world so confused. In short, we are being manipulated by a mass media who teach us what is right and wrong, not what is right and healthy.

    Hi Jason

I just read your report, and all I have to say is BRAVO. There is an awful lot of truth in it, I just wish our polititians thought like this.

    Dear Jason

Every one of your examples refers to a highly regulated market and while your complaints may be real your anger is misplaced for none of what you are complaining about has anything to do with capitalism. All your examples are government Socialism running amok. You should stick to what you know and Capitalism is not a subject that you understand. I like most of your stuff and i would be willing to give you a lesson on what capitalism is and How and why it is the only system that works. But you cannot start w2ith a capitalist (free market)system then regulate and later complain that it doesn't work

Not so fast, grasshopper, you may be shooting the messenger.Capitalism is the economic system that has given us all virtually every lifestyle item that we have in the western world. Society develops with the level of capitalism. Capitalism rewards profit not deviant behaviour. Deviant behaviour is a human failing with many things like money, alcohol, drugs, sex etc. Capitalism actually punishes deviant behaviour like, greed,on the part of a group of financial institutions which caused the sub-prime mortgage mess the U.S. is presently dealing with. Greed is a major deviance which is rampant today in the U.S. society and seems to be generally accepted. The pigeons will sooner or later come home to roost.

ok..for 25 years Doctors have not wanted their kids to go into medicine.... and now the young doctors don't either... truth is the alternative can help some... but when faced with the really tough challenges you will hope to have a few good scientist docs out there.....the massive increase in longevity is not from natural healing...... having said that i am actually sky high on prevention, sky high on thinking outside the box and sky high on recognizing other countries may have some great ideas that have not been properly studied.....however....some improvements are for the future....and it is frustrating to be caught with no clear answers to your challenges.....NOW.......

as for the state of the Republic.... a major problem is that women got the right to vote and vote their self interests and their emotions.... it is tragic...... where is the common good and clear thinking anymore..... certainly a major issue is that with the voters NOT holding the Public WHor...aka servants accountable they have stolen the strength of america... THe primary problem , however, is complete lack of Morality and Personal Accountability........It is amazing for me to watch the massive money Obama and Hilliary have made off the tax payer and how they want to CONT to give the Future earnings of americans to other countries...... and to cont to enslave americans..... I believe in americans Voluntarily Giving....not for the politicians to give WHAT IS NOT THEIRS TO GIVE...World tragedies will continue...but the biggest tragedy is Americans not using their energy to make Our country better.....

ps the only reason my kid is in medical school is because after being forced to explore all other careers by me ,,, she remembered most my statement how WE will need kind doctors to take care of us in OLD age......and,, since when i was in medical school , No kid survived who had cardiomyopathy and now heart transplants give them renewed and extra years...etc....cancer is not the instant death sentence either.........this is the traditional medicine...sorry..... BUT the solution to your concerns is clear and not Politically being done..

The solution is to put the LEGAL system into the Same critieria used in the medical systemm PRICE fix and inact laws to stop corruption.... the legal system has become .... well... certainly not with any honor......and so too the politicians

Norally, I do not comment on articles as my time is precious. However I felt compelled to write and express my thoughts b/c I love this country, the system has worked for me without being a "deviant", agree with some of your observations, but haven't heard any solutions from you just complaints....My first impression is that you seem awfully young to be so jaded. Are you one of the college students that you talk about moving back home with 'rentals because your're not qualified for a high paying job without putting in your dues and starting at the bottom like most hard working citizens. There are plenty of jobs available...but most kids feel entitled to start at $100K or more just for graduating college. So now you hate capitalism. I graduated at a time in our nations

history that was also terrible. High inflation, high gas prices/long lines, Hostaages in Iran, A president (Jimmy Carter) who was weak, paralyzed and impotent although a "nice" person. It took a man like Ronald Reagan to jump start the economy...but that's another story. I started at the absolute bottom. I found there are plenty of "starter" jobs and I landed one at $106/week. I was thrilled to get a job. Guess what if you work hard and do your job well you'll get promoted fast! After five years I was the youngest Director and woman in my company --a major NYC magazine publishing house and on my way to earning over $100k a few years later.

I agree with some of your points but disagree with your rationale. Actually what you should despise is the lack of moral integrity that has become the modus operandi and is at the crux of "diviant" behavior rampant in this country. This is not "capitalism's" fault but a result of removing God and morals (a sense of right and wrong)out of our great society. Honesty and integrity are no longer valued nor are taught to the majority of our children. Our country was founded on "freedom" more specifically religious freedom and the value of "hard" work (ever hear of the Puritan work ethic?)and without these values all of the "deviant" offenses that you mention in your article are the result. There is no compassion or honest work between fellow men/women, but each person for him/herselves. Do not blame "capitalism" it is what allows individuals with drive and desire to help make our nation great and have the independence and finanacial freedoms that others in non-capitalistic societies will never achieve. Not to mention are dying to get into our country whether legally or illegally! Further I disagree with your statement, "Don't blame the illegal immigrants" but put blame instead on the businesses. Both (businesses & illegals)in my opinion should be penalized for breaking the law. Instead focus on a plan and some solutions to address the reasons behind the moral decay in america that is causing citizens of this great nation to make the "diviant" choices they are making and ruining society for those of us who love this country and want to live life successfully with integrity. What a person does and how they choose to act whether morally or in immoral ways is what I feel is the demise of our country's economic status and power. Our country started falling apart after the 50's when moral decay began. It's only magnified throughout the years. If we allow it to continue our great nation will go the way of all great nations before us...become obsolete!
