Jaesop's money lesson...

Thursday, April 24, 2008 | Jason Jovine

Rating:
I was always taught to never discuss politics or religion with people because it was just too sensitive a topic. For example, I met a guy from New Orleans, LA, a couple of years ago shortly after the Hurricane Katrina debacle. I told him that I thought Mayor Ray Nagin was horrible. Perhaps I was just spoiled by being a New Yorker and watching how Rudy Giuliani handled the aftermath of 9/11. Anyway, this guy’s face turned red and we almost came to fisticuffs. I would have squashed him, but I did my best to try to calm the situation down.

Anyway, the only thing that I will say about the current election is that every time that I see Barack Obama’s wife, I can’t help but  think that she reminds me of Omarosa from the Apprentice.

Back to business...

We all know that oil has been hitting new highs lately, inflation is out of control, and the dollar is low relative to other currencies. This is why it is super important for you, especially now, to have adequate control of your costs.

I know the government wants you to just spend, spend, spend, so that you can keep giving the little money that you have away to big business. I mean, you know how important it is for these CEO’s to keep their standard of living high! Don’t you know this?

I mean come on, you know how hard it can be to live on $50 or $100 million dollars a year. Give them a break! He he.

And, when you eventually get into too much debt from the spending, then you can declare bankruptcy! Oh - wait a minute, I forgot, you can’t really do that anymore.

So, you will just have to pay back these debts FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!!

And don’t forget: when you try to apply for a decent job so that you can pay back your debts, the company will ask you "Have you ever declared bankruptcy?" If you answer yes, then you probably won’t get the job but if you answer no, and they find out, then you will get fired.

God Bless the U.S.A.!

My message to you today is simple. Unlike your government, I think that you should control your costs and have a nice amount in savings.

Here is a small piece of a standard monthly expense worksheet (just use Google and I am sure that you can download many more of them).

Knowing is half of the battle!!!! Understand exactly where your money is going, know what is a necessity and what isn’t, and reduce costs where and when you can. Also, always be on the lookout for special promotions where you can save some money.

I’m not saying that you need to become that proverbial old lady at the supermarket with 100 coupons that you are unlucky enough to be stuck behind, but it never hurts to save where you can.

There is nothing worse than not having any money in the bank, working a job that you can’t stand for a boss that is a total scumbag, and being unable to leave that job because you need the money. Please don’t let that be you (I have been there).

I am not one of those people who thinks that money is important just for money’s sake, but it does give you certain freedoms (especially of choice) that you can’t get without it.

They say this country is the land of the free and the home of the brave. However in reality, we are the land of insecurity and the home of the weak. Money is our god, and without, it we have no freedom. Without it, you are a quasi-slave.

Until the next time folks...

Great article. In fact, I like your style throughout The Tycoon Report.

My only exception is that I think of money as a tool rather than a god (even with a little 'g). Other than that, you're right on target. Keep up the good service.

One last thing, a good economic book is "Good Capitalism, Bad Capitalism and the Economics of Growth and Prosperity" by William Baumol (my all-time favorite economist), Robert Litan, and Carl Schramm.

    Bully for you Jason!

At last someone has had the guts to say what I have thought all along about The mayor of NO.

He was not blamed for anything BUT what did he do?

Nothing, not even provide transportation for his people BEFORE all hell broke loose! And he knew. He was holed up in a luxury hotel until it was safe to come out. How abhorrent!

I congratulate you on yur courage.

As for saving, I have ALWAYS done so having learned from a very thrifty father and so am able to survive on a very, VERY meagre Social Security. Without savings, I shudder to think what i would be doing and where.

    An excellent aricle.

    Hope people learn from it.

    Great article, Jason!

Now if only I could get my wife to read your article and take a serious interest in our household expenses.

I'm actually embarrassed for your other editors/stock gurus.... Again.

THANK GOD for the OTHER writers in The Tycoon Report. They keep me reading. But reading Jason's articles are usually a disappointment.

I think this one hit a new low. The guy starts off talking about a guy he had an argument with about politics. Then Jason informs us that he would have kicked the guys butt in a fight. (Very informative. At this point, I wonder why I'm wasting my time with this newsletter as there are many out there. Then I remember that I love the Tycoon report Monday -Wednesday, and on Friday).

Then he says that Obama's wife looks like (or reminds him of) Amarosa. I feel like I'm listening to a second grader cracking jokes.

Why are you wasting my time right now? In light of the show "apprentice" Tycoon, please do everyone a favor and tell Jason "You're fired". (Even if he is family).

Please "Give ME a break! He he." (he he?)

THEN he stops in the middle of that talk on politics, and how he can beat someone up if he wanted to, (at this point, I'm thinking he's going to give some useful outlook on politics, how the election may impact my stock account, or how they are hurting the economy or something), but then he stops abruptly to talk about how you should be careful with your spending.

Thanks Jason. I am so happy I read this article. It helped me remember to be careful with my spending.

Then you shift the discussion to how CEOs make too much money. What on earth?

Look, I know when you write a lot sometimes you have bad days. Great athletes have bad games. Presidents make bad calls. EVERYONE has bad moments. But c'mon guys. Get this guy replaced with someone that lives up to the standards of the rest of your OUTSTANDING group.

I love The Tycoon Report. I have made LOTS of money because of it. I have avoided losses because of it. It's better than every other newsletter out there. ... ...

    Except for Thursdays.

Sorry to vent. I have an emotional attachment to this firm because I read your stuff for a very long time. BUT

Jason says: he was "always taught to never discuss politics or religion with people because it was just too sensitive a topic."

Well I was always taught that honesty is the best policy. So there ya have it.

Very poor article. Making comments about a person that has nothing to do with the purpose of this site in my view is in poor taste and unhelpful to those that are triing to gleem some useful information on the market etc.

Further, if your readership cannot figure basic household style accounting, they darn well shouldn't be worried about investing their hard earned money in the market as they likely don't have any to invest anyway.

I suggest the Tycoon Report stick to it's mandate ? and write about financial issues or move over beside the Ann Landers column.

The one commentor is correct. Don't blame the government. You are the government. You got man you elected ( sort of ) twice, not just once. Both we in Canada and you in the US are now living with the consequences. Now do something about it this time round before we all go into the drink and elect someone who is more concerned about their own country and it's destiny rather than running around triing to democracize others at your expense.

    les Canada.

I don't see your point about Mrs. Obama, but only an idiot like Rudy would place communication center inside of Worldtrade Bldg after it got bombed 8 yrs earlier. His post 9/11 is nothing but showing up.
