Capitalism gone wild...

Thursday, May 8, 2008 | Jason Jovine

I decided that I had to write this article because capitalism in the U.S. has become so annoying that I need to vent about it.  It has gotten to the point where I can't even go to the bathroom, anymore, without some annoying retard standing there waiting for me to finish so that he can offer me a towel to wipe my wet hands (I do wash them, you know) or a mint for my breath or something.  It is getting out of control, and it's happening so subtly that most of us aren't even paying attention to it.

When I go to Starbucks and many other establishments, they have their tip jars out, expecting us to tip them for simply doing their jobs.  Do you all remember the good old days when you gave a person a tip because they provided excellent service?

Everything costs money nowadays.  Everybody has his hand out.  Capitalism has totally gone wild!

The cause...

Look, I could go on and on about how businesses have carte blanche in our society. Businesses RUN OUR COUNTRY, folks.  They get away with murder, literally.  Shouldn't it be illegal to smoke?  How can the government allow poison to be sold to its people?

Drug companies exercise major control over the FDA.  They get their drugs approved knowing that there will be problems discovered down the road, but they look at peoples' lives like they're just business decisions.  They do a cost/benefit analysis of the situation before the drug comes to market, and they know that when they get sued for their bogus drug that it will still cost less than the revenue that they made from the sales of that drug (e.g. Seldane, fen-phen, etc.,) so it is still profitable.

They even sold out the kids.  In schools, they have soda and snack machines that get the children hyper and moody, and then they tell the counselors and teachers that these kids need drugs to calm them down (e.g. Prozac, Ritalin.)  Don't they have a great racket going?

If you want to change the kids' diet and don't believe that they should take these prescriptions, then you are considered a bad parent because you are not doing what they want you to do.  They have a word for it, folks; it's called 'neglect'.

Are you really the one who is guilty of neglect?

What about the oil companies?  George Bush gave them a multi-billion dollar tax credit not so long ago.  Did they really need it?  Don't they make enough money already?

He claims that we are fighting a war on terror.  If we are really in a war on terror, then why are we buying oil from the terrorists?  We are the ones funding the terrorists.  Why don't we do what Brazil has done?  Brazilians use very little fossil fuel, if any.  We have about a 13 trillion dollar economy.  Why can't we?

We can't because the military companies and the oil companies have too much power.  There is too much money involved.  If we completely stopped buying oil from the Middle East, then they wouldn't have the money to purchase their so-called "weapons of mass destruction".

What about the credit card companies?  The Bush administration passed a bankruptcy law a couple of years ago that makes it harder for the people who need a fresh start to get one.  This was a gift to the credit card companies.

Now, let me ask you something.  If, God forbid, you got seriously ill and fell on some really hard times and racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, and and you couldn't eliminate it, rather you would be paying it back for the rest of your sick life, how would you feel?  Ladies and gentleman, this is happening every day.  What's next - debtors' prison?

Ladies and gentlemen, whether it is Ultimate Fighting (UFC) on televison where they show people beating the hell out of each other or the other above examples, capitalism has gone wild!  If you are not paying attention, you may wake up one day and say, "What the hell happened to this country of ours?"

I know that I will get some love and hate mail about this article:  I expect it.  All I ask is that if you criticize me, just make it constructive.  Fair enough?

Don't get me wrong, capitalism works because people are intrinsically selfish by nature, and capitalism rewards selfish and sometimes deviant behavior instead of cooperation with one another.  I will just say that ANY extreme, whether it is our version of capitalism or North Korea's version of socialism, is not good, and we are headed towards capitalism version 2.0, and fast.

Could this be one of the reasons that the Middle East is so frightened about our exporting our values to them?

Until the next time, folks, spend your hard earned money wisely.

American Capitalism is a BIG LIE

Its Welfare for Capitalists when our 2-party system is practically OWNED by Corporate America.

Hey, an opposition party is not even allowed to

participate in presidential debates and that has

been decreed thru Bi-Partisanship (double speak)

I love articles like this one where apples and oranges are mixed together as if the were fungible. Our mixed economy is not Capitalism. And it is quickly turning towards Socialism with candidates like Obama and Clinton.

Since we are not Capitalist, everything you said about it is false. It is not our brand of Capitalism and someone else's brand of Capitalsim, it is either we are or we are not. Captitalist follow that which is natural to economics while Keynesian mixed economies follow voo-doo arbitrary planning of economies that always lead to their demise. I'll leave it short for the more serious discussions later. By the way my old e-mail was rdubois12|cox.net

    Lester Quotes:

"Would you rather have our government controlling our capitalist system like the socialists?"

Are you from another continent? What do you call the U.S. government continuosly GIVING our American tax dollars to privately owned financial institutions and awarding gigantic tax credits to multi-billion dollar corporations?

Would you rather have our government controlling our capitalist system like the socialists? The wonderful thing about (extreme) capitalism is that it will correct itself if left alone. Unlike what's happening in the housing market.

You have valid points such as the FDA and oil co. tax credits being used to help certain favorite industries in deference to the citizens. Your fundamental mistake is that you substitute capitalism for freedoms. Ex. smoking and ultimate fighting. You may not like them, your freedom, some may find otherwise, their freedom. If you like a warm fireplace, your freedom, others may not. Where does it stop? Who decides?

You shouldn't mix facts with anecdotes. It makes your advice less valuable. For example, bankruptcy doesn't make you pay for life for serious medical debts. It primarily looks at debts for things you could have done without and sets up a reasonable repayment over the next five years (generally). I will agree it was enacted to help credit card cos. Yes it unfairly burdens some people. And no I am not a lawyer.

Also, you must be going to much better bathrooms than me. (That's why I used the fireplace example) I just hope for paper towels in the dispenser. That's most people's world.

I may be naive but it seems to me that honest money, backed by precious metal, would go a long way to keep our country stable and much more honest. Politicians and Wall St would have a much more difficult time to con the public. I doubt there is anyway to create working regulations that would control fiat money. I believe fiat money is the ultimate power game, even though it will probably be a brief game, to the benefit to those in power. The general public is probably in deep trouble right up to a revolution. This has already gone on for over thirty years but I suspect the day of reckoning is nigh, to everyones sorrow.

Jason, you sound a little like a college kid who's looking for someone to blame. Sure, the world is full of problems, and people’s selfishness is going to aggravate that all the more. But the problem isn’t capitalism. You’ll find that same selfishness and trouble on the part of so many under any system of government throughout history. Our system has given the individual (you and I) more freedom and motivation to work and so to produce goods and improve life than any other to date, and we’ve all benefited. Are all the problems solved? No way! But let’s not throw the whole thing in the trash. The bad feelings that so many have toward America are based in envy! When we as individuals (not the government) choose to start fixing the selfish problem that will be the first step to genuine improvement. But that’s an individual matter. Let’s all improve what we can improve, vote for better leaders, and be a positive influence on others. You’ll never see heaven on earth, but do what you can to make it so.

I’ll add that I hope Tycoon will filter out this type material and concentrate on genuinely instructive financial columns. I’ve found myself less inclined to read Tycoon than I used to be, and this style doesn’t help. Let the more mature writers do the writing so you’ll be your best.

The sad fact with the majority of America is their inability to define what poor and rich actually mean. According to U.S. government statistics the average poor family in America: 43% owns an air conditioned 3 bed/2 ba/2 car garage home, 97% owns a color t.v., 76% own video games, 99% own refrigerators, 77% own microwaves, 75% own vehicles (43% own 2 or more) just to name some of the luxuries. What would you classify the homeless and starving here and abroad? The socialist U.S. government's statistics declare this living standard here as poor. In third world countries this would be labeled the "RICH CLASS".

This selfish way of living is the product of brainwashing through education, capitalism at its worst, and American parents not choosing to raise their children according to the gospel and financially responsible!

Most foreign countries, look at American's as spoiled and fortunate! There are 3 ways to enslave humans: war, religion and economically! American's for the most part are completely dissillusioned as a direct result of their economic enslavement to the capitalistic commercial system that is seeking to control every inch of GOD'S beautiful solar system! The Business Behind America Is Business!

Yet still, America is the home of the Brave: will fight for its own causes! America is the home of the Free: everyone smart enough and strong enough has the right to refuse partaking in capitalism and the ability to avoid brainwashing by staying away from government schools and choosing to homeschool their children while raising their children with responsible GOD like values! America is the land of Opportunity: Those smart and lucky enough can choose to become the richest in the world while living for GOD!

    Let's get our priorities straight!

    GOD BLESS!

The sad fact of the matter, is that most people equates freedom and Capitalism: WRONG. We have sold our freedom for money and more money, not for quality of life.We in Canada has been a willing "victim" of this disease. Yes! the nations of the Middle East detest the value of America's business, but so do most Americans.

To all of the readers who agree with the need for stricter regulations that prevents individual consumers from filing bankruptcy as a result of a lifetime of poor money management.

Do you agree with a legal system that continuosly financially bails out privately owned financial institutions with your tax dollars (if you pay taxes), and awards huge, huge tax credits to mutibillion dollar corporations like the US government does?

    I DON'T!

    GOD BLESS!

WHO IS THIS WRITING THIS PIECE? simplistic, hackneyed, superficial commentary and WRONG: especially the specious comments about making our children disturbed by snack foods and then drugging them (into submission). Is this a naive Scientologist analysis? The silly opinions about bancrupsy have been well addressed by other commentators.
